The Mud Hens went undefeated to capture the Triple Crown Series Spring Championship at Big League Dreams in Gilbert, AZ. The Mud Hens only gave up a total of 4 runs (2 earned) and 9 hits in 5 games while outscoring their opponents 53-4. With this Championship the Mud Hens secured a berth in the Triple Crown World Series in Steamboat Springs, CO and the Fall Nationals in Henderson, NV.
"We've been practicing very hard and scrimmaging teams for the last 6 weeks in preparation of this tournament and the boys could have not performed any better" says Manager Ted Schuman. The pitching for the Mud Hens was simply flawless walking only 3 batters in 5 games. Plus, the offense averaged over 10 runs per game as the Hens run ruled 4 of the 5 teams they played. The only game that went the distance was the Championship Game against the Blaze which ended 3-1 in favor of the Mud Hens.
The Championship Game was locked at 1-1 until the bottom of the 6th when the Hens pushed 2 across to break the tie and go up 3-1 which was the final score. The game was tightly contested throughout the contest and could have gone either way. "The Blaze always put a quality team on the field and we knew we would have to play our very best to beat them. They have a lot of very talented players and were getting stronger as they advanced deeper in the tournament", says Schuman
This tournament may have had the deepest field this year with teams from Alaska to Illinois competing for the TCS Crown. The Mud Hens now travel out of State to St. George, Utah where they'll defend their title in the Rocky Mountain School of Baseball March Madness Tournament. This tournament sells out every year and is again loaded with 40 top notch teams from around the West Coast.
